Understanding the fertile window
Why fertility spans several days, how apps estimate that window, and why uncertainty matters.

Biology creates a multi-day window
Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for several days under favorable conditions. The egg is usually available for a much shorter time after ovulation. Together, those facts create a fertile window that starts before egg release.
Apps begin with probability
A calendar app generally uses previous cycle lengths to estimate a likely next period and works backward to suggest possible ovulation timing. Better estimates show a range and adapt as more cycle starts are recorded.
Estimates have limits
Stress, illness, postpartum changes, perimenopause, PCOS, and ordinary variation can move ovulation. Do not treat a green or fertile day in an app as proof of fertility—and do not treat any other day as guaranteed infertile.
