Postpartum bleeding is not necessarily a period
Bleeding and discharge after birth, called lochia, are part of recovery and are different from a menstrual cycle. Follow the postpartum instructions from your maternity care team.
Cycle return is variable
Ovulation and menstruation may return at different times, particularly when breastfeeding. Because ovulation occurs before the next period, pregnancy is possible before someone sees their first postpartum period.
Do not rely on an app for postpartum contraception
Calendar predictions are not designed for the rapid hormonal changes after pregnancy. Discuss contraception and breastfeeding with a qualified clinician. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, faintness, fever, chest pain, breathing trouble, or severe worsening pain.
